The deadlift has a bad reputation, mostly from people who learned it badly. Done well, it is the lift that fixes the most backs in my studio.
Start from blocks
We lift the bar from blocks at knee height first, so you learn to hinge at the hips without worrying about the floor. Two sessions later we lower the blocks.
Push the floor away
Think about pushing the floor away with your feet rather than pulling the bar up. Your back stays long and the legs do the work.
Most clients deadlift from the floor by week three and their bodyweight by week twelve.
